Small kidney tumors, also known as renal masses, are becoming more common due to the increasing use of imaging. The traditional treatment for renal masses has been radical nephrectomy (removal of the entire kidney), but it has been recognized for some time that this represents overtreatment for the majority of patients with small masses. Instead, treatment options such as partial nephrectomy and cryoablation have become much more common. Treatment should be tailored to the needs of each patient depending on the characteristics of the mass and the patient’s age and medical co-morbidities.

Renal cryoablation has emerged as a viable treatment option for the management of small renal masses, but we believe that there is not enough good evidence in the medical literature on the subject. While properly conducted randomized controlled trials comparing cryoablation to partial nephrectomy would be ideal, a prospective registry of cases would provide high-quality data to evaluate the merits and drawbacks of this relatively new treatment.

EuRECA is a group of clinicians aiming to collect, analyze, and publish high-quality data on renal cryoablation through a registry. The clinicians include both urologists and interventional radiologists, reflecting the range of specialists involved in renal cryoablation. We invite like-minded clinicians to register and submit data on their cases.

Mission statement

Our mission is to provide support to both the medical community and patients with regard to the cryoablation of kidney tumours.

EuRECA fosters learning by sharing knowledge and academic excellence, primarily by collecting and publishing clinical outcomes through a registry.

Objectives

1. Promote and Support International Collaboration in Renal Cryoablation
2. Creation of a European Network
3. Infrastructure to Support a Registry
4. Platform for Technological Development in Partnership with Industry
5. Promotion of Patient and Clinician Education
